Crossing Uzbekistan’s Borders

Uzbekistan's borders: crossings and routes

Where to go and how to cross the border

Choose a country and a crossing. The cards show available opening hours, the distance between border posts with luggage and the route to the next city.

Yallama and Kaplanbek are options between Tashkent and Shymkent. On days when trains run and seats are available, you can travel from Mangystau to Karakalpakstan by train from Beyneu to Kungrad. Passenger traffic via Ayritom has resumed in part, but general access for tourists holding third-country passports has not been established.

Choosing a crossing and changing vehicles

Choose the country and the next city. If you change vehicles at the border, carry your belongings through both controls; your driver meets you beyond the second post. At Shavat, a local shuttle may cover part of the route.

Each card separates opening hours, the route between posts, how to cross, nearby places and the onward route. The distance between posts is the part travelled with your luggage, not the road from a city to the border. Some hours are the ordinary schedule set out in agreements; temporary restrictions and queues can change your travel time.

Afghanistan: what we know about Ayritom / Hairatan

• Between posts: The Friendship Bridge over the Amu Darya is about 1 km long; the full route between posts may be longer. Walking across with luggage depends on passenger admission.

• Nearby places: Termez and Ayritom / Hairatan, then Mazar-i-Sharif.
• Route: Termez–Ayritom–Friendship Bridge–Hairatan–Mazar-i-Sharif; we do not use it as a standard land route for foreign tourists at present.

Passport, visa and length of stay

Do you need a visa?

Visa-free entry and electronic visas depend on your nationality, passport and purpose of travel. An Uzbek visa does not replace a visa for a neighbouring country.

How long should your passport remain valid?

Your passport must remain valid throughout the trip. For travel to Uzbekistan, it is sensible to allow at least six months from your entry date; for a consular visa, the passport must remain valid for at least three months after the visa expires.

Can you leave and re-enter?

A short exit does not automatically start a new visa-free period. Re-entry depends on your nationality and the number of entries allowed by your visa.

When do you need to register your stay?

A place of stay is normally registered within three working days. A hotel handles this for guests; for private accommodation, the host is responsible. Exceptions apply to some short stays and transit trips. Keep proof of registration until departure.

On foot, by car and with a transfer

Is an international crossing open to every tourist?

No. Entry depends on your passport, visa and passenger admission rules. Use Yallama or Kaplanbek between Tashkent and Shymkent; the Daut-Ata road post does not serve pedestrians, cars or bus passengers; Ayritom is not a regular route for foreign tourists.

Can you cross on foot?

When changing vehicles at a crossing that admits pedestrians, carry your belongings through both controls. At Shavat, a local shuttle may cover part of the route when available.

How long does a crossing take?

Queue times cannot be predicted. When changing vehicles, allow time for the road to the post, both controls, carrying luggage and meeting your transport on the other side.

What happens at the border post?

You pass passport and customs control. Do not film control procedures. Other photography or filming at the post requires permission from the head of border control; phone calls must not interfere with checks.

Children and private cars

What documents does a child need?

A child needs their own valid passport or another travel document accepted by the destination country. Parental consent and proof of relationship depend on the child's nationality and the route.

Travelling in your own car

Drive across only at posts that permit vehicle traffic. The driver needs a licence, vehicle papers, insurance and, where required, temporary import documentation.

Can you take a rental car across?

A rental car may cross a border only with the owner's permission and the required documents. Otherwise, continue in another vehicle after crossing on foot.

Groups and buses

Buses and private transfers may use different drop-off points. If changing vehicles, agree in advance how to handle luggage and where to meet after the second control.

Customs, medicines and unexpected changes

Cash and purchases

Cash and goods may need to be declared at both borders. Keep receipts for expensive purchases; exporting cultural property may require a separate permit.

Medicines

Carry medicines in their original packaging. Narcotic and psychotropic medicines are subject to special rules and declaration requirements; the documents needed depend on the medicine's contents.

Drones

Bringing in or using a drone without the required permit is prohibited. You must declare one in transit; a declaration does not give permission to fly it.

If a crossing is unavailable

For a closed post, use the route and transport shown in its card. If you lose your passport, contact your country's consulate.

Frequently asked questions about Uzbekistan's borders

Are Gisht-Kuprik and Daut-Ata open to passengers?

Gisht-Kuprik / Zhibek Zholy is closed for reconstruction; no date has been announced for passenger crossings to resume. Yallama and Kaplanbek are options between Tashkent and Shymkent. Daut-Ata is closed to pedestrians, cars and buses; if you have a ticket, you can take a Beyneu–Kungrad train instead of crossing by road.

Can an Uzbekistan e-visa be used to enter a neighbouring country?

No. An Uzbekistan e-visa is valid only for entry into Uzbekistan. You need that neighbouring country's own visa or visa-free eligibility.

Does a short exit renew a visa-free stay?

Not necessarily. A short exit does not by itself reset the visa-free period. Your nationality, visa-free conditions and the number of entries allowed by your visa matter.

Who registers your stay after entry?

A hotel registers its guests; for private accommodation, the host is responsible. Registration is normally completed within three working days, with exceptions for some short stays. Keep the confirmation.

Can you use your phone or take photos at a crossing?

You may use a phone if the call does not interfere with checks. Do not film control procedures; other filming at the post requires permission from the head of border control.

What if the queue is long?

There is no single waiting time. Allow time for the queue, both controls, luggage and travel onward from the border.

How can a foreign tourist travel from Uzbekistan into Afghanistan?

Passenger movement via Ayritom / Hairatan resumed in December 2025, but general admission and crossing hours for tourists with third-country passports have not been published. The bridge is not part of our regular land tours. You need a passport and an Afghan visa, but a visa alone does not guarantee passage. Afghanistan's tourist e-visa covers arrival at Kabul airport. Entry to the Termez trade centre does not grant access across the bridge.
