This route combines historic Panjakent, UNESCO-listed archaeological Sarazm and the mountain lakes of Haft Kul without the pace of a one-day excursion. On day one, explore the heritage of Sogdiana and continue to the lower lakes. Stay overnight in a family-run guesthouse in Shing Valley, then visit Marguzor and, when the road is open and safe, Hazorchashma the following morning.
The cross-border arrangements are organised in advance. An Uzbek driver takes you to the Jartepa checkpoint; you complete the border controls and neutral-zone walk independently; a local guide and driver meet you after you fully exit the Sarazm checkpoint. Transport in both countries, guided visits, entrance tickets, one night, four meals and drinking water are included.

The most comfortable period is usually from late spring to mid-autumn; outside that period, access to the upper valley is checked separately.

Documents, border and mountain road
What must be checked before confirmation
- Passport: every participant needs the original of a valid passport for international travel.
- Entry to Tajikistan: rules depend on nationality and passport type; when required, apply in advance through the official eVisa portal.
- Return to Uzbekistan: your right to re-enter must remain valid after departure. A used single-entry visa may not be sufficient.
- Checkpoint: the current operation of Jartepa / Sarazm and any restrictions are checked before travel.

The driver collects you in Samarkand and takes you to the checkpoint entrance. The vehicle does not cross the international border.

Controls and neutral zone
You complete passport and customs procedures and walk approximately 0.6–1 km between the controlled zones with your documents and personal luggage.
Tajikistan
After Sarazm checkpoint
The local guide and driver meet you outside after you fully exit the controlled area. Their contacts and the meeting point are stated in the voucher.
Mountains
Route based on conditions
Rain, high water or roadworks can affect speed and access to the upper lake. The driver’s safety decision takes priority.
CAJ.UZ checks documents and arranges services before confirmation, but the border authority makes the final entry decision. The Sarazm checkpoint and the archaeological site of the same name are separate places.

Operational flexibility: a significant border delay on day one may require the guide to change the order of the museum, bazaar and archaeological sites. Safety and reaching the guesthouse before late evening take priority over the length of individual stops.

Family-run guesthouse
Accommodation is planned near Nofin or in another confirmed village in the valley. The property, rooming arrangement and bed type are stated in your voucher.
Not a city hotel
This is simple mountain accommodation. Bathrooms may be shared, and mobile coverage, electricity and hot water may be less consistent than in Samarkand or Panjakent.
Standard local menu
Lunch and dinner on day one and breakfast and lunch on day two are included. Allergies, vegetarian meals and other dietary needs must be agreed in advance.
What to pack for one night
Bring a small soft bag, closed shoes with good grip, a warm layer, sun protection, personal medication, toiletries and a power bank. You carry your belongings through the neutral zone yourself.
The Seven Lakes of Haft Kul
The chain lies in the gorge of the Shing River. More than 14 km and a substantial gain in elevation separate the first and seventh lakes, which is why access to the upper section depends on road conditions.

The elongated lake and villages along its shore form the quieter central part of the valley, near the planned overnight stay.

Khurdak is the smallest lake in the chain; Marguzor is the largest and one of the principal panoramas on day two.
